Project Spotlight:
Full Hardscape Installation
This client recently had a large screened deck installed at their property and really wanted to maximise their outdoor space for entertainment. In order to create a level patio, we had to install a small retaining wall.
The client wanted to elevate some of those walls into seat walls to increase sitting space. To enhance the area for entertainment, an outdoor ‘table’ at counter height was installed, with a small trash drawer and a single-piece thermal-cut bluestone countertop was specified. A plumbed gas firepit with a 20,000BTU burner was installed to keep people warm on colder evenings. To keep the recti-linear area feeling natural, large landscape boulders were incorporated throughout the patio to break up the lines.
Finally, the walls had landscape lights installed beneath the caps, and there were up-lights installed on existing trees to increase ambient light at night. The area was prepped for plants, that will be completed in the following spring. A paver-slab ‘stepping stone’ walkway was installed from the side gate to the patio.
Project Spotlight:
Site Transformation & Patio Installation
This site had been recently purchased by the client after sitting vacant for several years. The rear yard was on a steep slope that backed up to a nature reserve – beautiful with plenty of trees but difficult to access. On top of that, there were weeds and tree stumps everywhere.
White Rose Landscaping first cleaned the site and removed everything that was not staying. A natural firepit area was created by installing boulders into the slope to level out a circular area, then was topped with 1″ River Rock for a fire-proof area. A natural stepping-stone walkway was then installed from the firepit area to the exterior basement door beneath the deck. To control erosion, this walkway was surrounded by smaller River Rock.
A small timber wall was removed and rebuilt beneath the deck. At two points, natural step boulders were used to allow access to the bottom of the property. These transitioned to installed timbers to make movement a little easier. Beneath the deck, the area was excavated and enlarged for a patio, with short retaining walls that were elevated to seat height. Steps were put in that led to another smaller patio, located just outside the deck area. The walls had lights installed beneath the caps, and lights were added to the walkway areas to make movement at night easier and safer.
An existing flagstone stepping-stone walkway was re-worked and sod was installed to create a low-maintenance area that serves as its own oasis of calm. Plants will be installed in the upcoming Spring.
